New Female Rider Looking for Advise

Hi all,

I'm a brand new rider. I've never ridden anything on two wheels other than a bicycle. I've ridden as a passenger most of my life and it's always been a dream of mine to have my own bike. So I took the Safety Course, got my endorsement and bought myself a 2007 1200C Sportster three weeks ago. I love the bike, it feels good when I sit on it and ride it but I'm having a problem that is pretty significant. When I apply the front break I have a tendancy to roll the throttle. So far…

LOL don't know which way we'll be riding when Barbara and go down next month to see Pop. We wanna see Barbara's son in College but I don't know if we'll go there first or after we visit Pop and possibly head down to Key west. I know we'll be visiting Alabama jacks in Key Largo. Maybe we can visit you on the way down too. HAHA

hi denise, it sounds like you might have to tight of grip on your throttle when braking. try to relax your hands, palm flat on throttle and light pressure with fingers on brake lever. the more you ride, the more comfortable & relaxed you'll get. it goes against what you were taught in class but i only use my index & middle finger when braking. hang in there and relax. love, james d.

I found this site doing a google search:  http://www.webbikeworld.com/t2/pazzo/adjustable-levers.htm   Some of the ones shown here look ugly but, it may lead to something more tastefully done that will work. These are adjustable. The further you go down the page the better they look.

On the lighter side of this "problem"...you could probably master the torque stand technique (lock front brake and smoke the back tire) pretty easily! Ha!

Good luck!

Look for different levers. Ones that curve back towards the grips will cut 1/2 inch off the reach or so. That will make is easier to reach and most likely stop your throttle roll.

I did that for a buddy's Ninja 900. He was 5'4" and had small hands. It worked perfect for him.

Denise I did the same thing, about rolling the throttle...just let loose of the throtttle totally, use your 2 - 4 finger to slightly squeeze the front break and remember to apply both breaks.
